TEMPE, Ariz. - According to a report released Wednesday, former Arizona Correction Director Charles Ryan “committed Aggravated Assault” against officer Fahed Salameh and detective Michael McCasland. Police initially responded to Ryan’s residence when they received a call that he “shot himself while in the bathroom” according to officer Blake Dunn. Dunn talked to Ryan’s wife, Kathleen Ryan, in which she explained that her husband informed her that he was going to bed and she saw him 45 minutes after that getting a drink, and then he went back to their room. At around 9:22 p.m., Kathleen “heard a loud ‘boom’ sound from the master bedroom bathroom,” and she ran to the bathroom to see Charles covered in blood and bleeding from the head. When officer Dunn talked to Kathleen about Charles, “she explained he has never made any statements about harming himself or others.” When the officers arrived at the scene, officer Fahed Salameh said that they were giving announcements to Charles, who was not responsive to the commands. After several minutes, Charles opened the door to the garage and hid his body behind the door. Salameh said, “I could only see his head, then in his left hand with a small black object.” Charles did not move when he was given commands to show his hands to officers. Salameh got a better look at what was in his hand and realized that it was a firearm. According to detective Michael McCasland, “I gave Charles multiple commands to drop the gun and could still only see his left hand with the handgun pointed towards the ground.” McCasland said that he feared for his and officer Salameh’s life and that Charles would point the gun towards them again since he was still not compliant. “It was at that point that I deployed a less lethal beanbag round Charles’ left hand,” Charles quickly shut the door and went back inside after this happened. Around 12:57 a.m., Charles eventually exited the house, was taken into custody, and was placed in an ambulance so that he could be taken to Chandler Regional Medical Center for his wounds. As of now, there are no pending charges against Charles Ryan in the Maricopa County Superior Court.
